Food for Kids Backpack Program
Each week, backpacks are filled by volunteers with practical, nutritious foods and delivered to North Drive Elementary. They are given to students who have little or no food to eat on the weekends. The students then return the backpacks on Monday, where they are picked up to be refilled.
You can help. Food donations may be dropped off at The First Church information desk on Sunday or Monday through Thursday from 9AM to 5PM. All money donated is tax deductible. The backpacks cost about $5 to fill a bag per week. That’s only $200 a year to help feed a child. Checks need to be made out The First Church with “backpack food” in the memo line. All money donated is used to purchase food and backpacks. You can also mail your check to The First Church, 1100 The First Church Road, Goldsboro, NC 27534.
We have very carefully chosen the food items that go into each backpack. The food must be kid-friendly, lightweight, shelf stable and easy to prepare. We have a very specific list of food items accepted for the backpacks. Therefore, we ask that all food donations match items that are on this list. Each backpack is filled with the following items:
15 oz. cans of spaghetti & meatballs, ravioli, beefaroni, chicken viennas, beans & franks, chicken
15 oz. cans of green beans, corn, baked beans
individual or family sized mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese
ramen noodles (chicken or beef), chicken noodle soup, noodles with tomato sauce
individual sized applesauce, mixed fruit, diced peaches, oranges
capri sun, 100% or low sugar juice boxes
individually wrapped packs of cookies, rice krispie treats, dipping sticks, pringles, chips, nabs, etc.
individually sized chocolate or vanilla pudding
grits, cereal, pop tarts, oatmeal, etc.
All foods provided must be free of peanut, pork and seafood. Also, no fresh fruits due to pest issues.
